Why This Day Is Special

Led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), it aims to significantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer. It serves as a powerful call to action for individuals, communities, and governments to unite in the fight against cancer. The day highlights the need for equitable access to cancer care for everyone.

History Behind the Day 

World Cancer Day was established in 2000 at the first World Summit Against Cancer, held in Paris. The Paris Charter, adopted at this summit, outlined a commitment to promoting research, preventing cancer, improving patient services, and mobilizing the global community. It aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education. It promotes an understanding that cancer is a global health priority.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, responsible for an estimated 10 million deaths in 2020. Up to 50% of cancer cases are preventable through healthy lifestyle choices, such as avoiding tobacco, maintaining a healthy weight, and exercising regularly. Early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment. Advances in cancer research continue to offer new hope.
